With the rich Musical Heritage and Culture of Kerala in the GODS OWN COUNTRY , Music and Fine Arts Education attained greater prominence and made remarkable openings for highly talented students who took greater interest to learn music as main subject and became performing artists of repute. The great musical contributions of the Legends who lived in Kerala had contributed greatly for the preservation of Music Education in Kerala. Considering the musical values and its role in Education system, the Government of Kerala established THREE major Music COLLEGES in Kerala under the Higher Education Department. The Director of Collegiate Education controls the administration.
The three Music Colleges are : SRI SWATHI THIRUNAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC , Thiruvananthapuram affiliated to the University of Kerala imparting BPA and MPA courses in Vocal Music, Veena,Violin, Mridangam and Dance.
R.L.V.COLLEGE OF MUSIC AND FINE ARTS, ( Radha Lakshmi Vilasam College of Music and Fine Arts) Tripunithura in Ernakulam District. As part of providing facility for advanced learning in the field of Performing and Fine Arts, The Government of Kerala provides PLAN FUND to a tune of Rs. 1 Crore every year for organising Music Naatya Festival, All India Conference on Music Education, Painting,Applied Art and Sculpture exhibition . As part of the academic initiative students are provided the opportunity Visiting Places of Fine Arts Education, Visiting Places of Naatya importance , Visiting Places of Musical importance enabling them to interact with the faculty members and students of various institutions in India. Eminent Exponents, Scholars, Musicologist of International repute are invited in the campus as part of SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE and SHORT TERM PROGRAMMES.
All the three Music Colleges are well equipped with most modern IT facility and Library.
In addition to the Three Major Music Colleges, Music Degree and P.G. courses (B.A. and M.A.) are conducted at the Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram under University of Kerala , Government College, Chittur, Palakkad under the University of Calicut.
B.A. Degree course in Music is offered at the Maharajas College, Ernakulam under the Mahatma Gandhi University . B.A. Music Degree course is offered in the N.S.S.College for Women, Thiruvananathapuram and S.N.College, Kollam both affiliated to the University of Kerala.
Swathi Thirunal College of Music, initially named The music Academy, is one of the prestigious and well managed music institutes of South India. It is situated in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala.
The academy was founded in 1939 and renamed as Swathi Thirunal College of Music in 1962. The college was affiliated to the University of Kerala in the year 1999 . The institution offers B.P.A ( BACHELOR OF PERFORMING ARTS ) Degree and M.P.A. ( MASTER OF PERFORMING ARTS ) P.G. Courses in Vocal Music, Veena, Violin, Mridangam and Dance. The first Principal of the College was Dr.HARIKESANALLUR MUTHAYYA BHAGAVATHAR.
Radha Lakshmi Vilasam College of Music and Fine Arts was established in the year 1936 by the Maharaja of Kochi. Now it is under the Kerala Government offering 13 degree courses and 11 post graduate courses. Disciplines include Vocal Music, Veena, Violin, Mridangam, Chenda, Maddalam, Kathakali, Kathakali music, Bharatha Natyam, Mohiniyattom, Painting, Sculpture and Applied art.
On September 18th of 2008 the new building was inaugurated by Minister of Education Mr.M A Baby. Former students and musical stalwarts like K J Yeshudas and Thiruvizha Jayashanker were also present at the historical moment.
The new building has two blocks and four floors with an area of 8,300 sq. feet. Each floor will be devoted to different art form. There are 55 class rooms in total.
CHEMBAI MEMORIAL GOVERNMENT COLLEGE OF MUSIC
The Government of Kerala with a vision and mission to provide facility for the highly talented music students of the Malabar region to learn the art of Classical Vocal and Instrumental Music established the Government Music Academy in the year 1957. The administrative control was vested with the Director of Public Instruction. The Music Academy offered four year Ganabhooshanam Diploma course in Vocal, Veena,Violin and Mridangam and three year Ganapraveena Post Diploma course in Vocal.
Eminent Exponents and Professors in the field of Classical Music and Instrumental Music served as Faculty members in the premier institution and their devotion and dedication for the cause of music, promotion and propagation of Classical Music has highly contributed for the success of Music education. Sangeetha Vidwan Sri.Madurai Keshava Bhagavathar was the first Principal.
In the year 1980, the Director of Collegiate Education took over the administrative control of the Music Academy. Considering the rich Musical and Cultural contributions of the great son of Palakkad , Legend Sri. Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, the Government decided to rename the Music Academy as Chembai Memorial Government Music College.
In the year 2000-2001, the premier institution was up graded and affiliated to the University of Calicut. The then existed Diploma and Post Diploma courses were re-structured as B.A. degree in Vocal,Veena,Violin and Mridangam. The Post Graduate Course M.A. in Vocal (MUSIC) has been sanctioned from the academic year 2010-2011.
